About The Author

Michael Metzler, MD, PhD

Michael was born in Iowa and raised with a great appreciation for the natural world, and the power of science.  He spent many years as an undergraduate at Iowa State University, studying a wide variety off subjects, with an emphasis on Botany.  He is a graduate of the NIH-sponsored Medical Scientist Training Program, and received an MD degree, and PhD from the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Iowa.  He has practiced medicine for 25 years, primarily in emergency departments in Iowa, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, West Virginia, Missouri, Oregon and California.

In the past he has also worked as a scientific illustrator, photographer, vegetarian chef, and juggler, and has resided in many locations including Guatemala, California and, many years ago, the Soviet Union.  He spent the better part of three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho, Southern Africa.

To this day, however, his greatest pleasure comes from the plant world.  He is an avid grower of plants, seeks respite in the forest, and strongly believes that plants, being the basis of all life, are the best solution to our ills, physical, psychic and environmental.
